Performance / Sound

Though not, for practical reasons, part of the Avant programme we thought we should mention two events occurring during the 9th – 18th July period. A double-bill of Conal Creedon plays, fresh from successful runs in New York and Shanghai, kicks off at the Cork Arts Theatre on Carroll’s Quay on July 13th (each night at 8pm). And for lovers of early and contemporary music, especially as they are associated with the rituals of the Church, there is a conference taking place on the weekend of the 10th, organised by the Catholic St. Colman’s Society. With papers on Gregorian chant and William Byrd, performances (at St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Paul Street – great minds think alike) by the Lassus Scholars and Thomas Lacôte, and the exciting inclusion of Scottish composer James McMillan, this promises to be an fascinating few days for music enthusiasts. We are assured by the organisers that the conference is open to all (simply turn up at the Imperial Hotel), but there is a €40 attendance fee. For more information see:
